Prepared for winter in Ladakh

Winter in Ladakh is demanding. Here is how we prepare you for it.

When to go

November to April

Our expeditions run from November to April, when snow leopards follow their prey to lower slopes. Each month has its character.

The founder's month-by-month guide
November–DecemberFewer visitors, clear skies, very cold nights
January–FebruaryThe coldest weeks; mating season begins, and cats are often more active and visible
March–AprilLonger days, slightly milder, some cats still with young
Altitude

Where will I be?

Leh is at about 3,500 metres. Our field valleys lie between about 3,500 and 4,300 metres.

How do you prepare me?

You spend at least two nights in Leh before going to the field (three if you are over 65). We check your oxygen levels morning and evening, carry oxygen in every vehicle, at base and at the Leh hotel, keep a portable altitude chamber (Gamow bag) at base, and our leaders are trained in first aid and altitude sickness. If you feel unwell, we slow down or descend; your health comes before any sighting.

Should I see a doctor first?

Yes, if you are over 70, or have a heart or lung condition. We ask every guest to complete a medical questionnaire.

Cold

How cold is it?

Days are often around 0°C in sunshine. Nights can fall to −20°C or below, and wind on the ridges makes it feel colder.

Where do I sleep?

In heated rooms, in Leh and in the valley. The common room is warm for meals and evening talks.

What if I don't have the right clothing?

We send a detailed list after booking, and can lend spare down jackets and boots.

Fitness

You should be able to walk for 30 minutes on uneven, rocky ground. Most of each day is spent at viewpoints watching through scopes. There is no technical climbing. The challenge is the altitude and the cold, not distance.

Permits and visas
  • You need an Indian visa before you travel. Odzer does not arrange visas.
  • Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for parts of Ladakh. We arrange it for you.
  • Citizens of some countries need separate clearance from India's Ministry of Home Affairs, which can take a month or more. Please tell us your nationality when you enquire.
Insurance

Travel insurance is required. It must cover travel at high altitude, helicopter evacuation and medical repatriation. We will ask for your policy details before departure.

Satellite devices

Please do not bring a satellite phone or GPS messenger (such as Garmin inReach or Zoleo). These devices are illegal in India without a licence, and travellers have been arrested for carrying them. Our team uses licensed radios.

Photography

Snow leopards are usually seen at 300 metres or more. A telephoto lens of 500–600 mm (or a zoom with a teleconverter), a sturdy tripod and spare batteries kept warm inside your jacket are recommended.
